Altars
Have I been “offered” on a Satanic Altar or designated to represent Mother Earth? An interesting question because altars are seen as central to rituals and ceremonies among certain satanic and pagan groups. It is a place for corporate observances, demanded or required by some, used by others because “It’s expected,” because today’s paganism seems to demand it, while the ancients didn’t use them in the sense they are today. Actually, I have been the “Altar” during a ritual observance.
While I won’t and am committed not to share our rituals, our observances follow the wheel of the year, and we are often skyclad. Our observances, weather permitting, are always outdoors and often in a wooded area we call “The Grove”. Sincere worship doesn’t demand we have a formal altar, as is often seen in online and other materials, similar to what is shown in the illustration I use. Truthfully, it’s not necessary. We each have our own personal sacred space or spaces. My “Special” personal space is simply a pentagram painted on the floor of my crafts room, under what I call the carpet, which came from our living room.
Modern “satanic” altars are, today, often a parody of the altar found in RC and other Christian churches. Evangelical churches do not have them. Rather there is what we call a “Communion Table” in the sanctuary, embossed with the words “Do This in Remembrance of Me” which is used when the church observes “The Lord’s Supper”, called the Eucharist in liturgical churches, but the elements, the bread and wine, are seen as symbolic and not transsubstantiated into the actual body and blood, etc.
We have a small chapel in our church, actually a larger room set aside and designated for small weddings and similar events. It’s often used for meetings. Similar to the sanctuary, there is an old communion table with candles and an open Bible without a central pulpit, as in the sanctuary, but a podium which can be moved. Again, without going into those not-so-necessary details, other than to simply say there are members of our circle who are members of our church and have keys to the buildings, others and I have engaged in blasphemous sex on that communion table, which one could designate an altar.
Many to most of today’s sincere followers “sail solo” for the most part, so, in the manner of the ancients, because the worship of He whom I affectionately call His Wickedness is older than Christianity. Modern satanists are seen as opposites to the “Church,” especially the revealed religions (look it up) in general. What we often see today as “satanic worship” isn’t what it was. I share all this for what it’s worth, responding yet again to a question often put to me.
And I will again point to the reality that today’s supposed satanic bodies, the Church of Satan and the Satanic Temple, don’t believe in a literal Satan or the supernatural and have made it a point in the past to advertise they are not devil-worshippers while giving that impression because they use all the symbols and other indicia. I will say no more, other than ask why someone would invest in worshipping something that they themselves say is and means nothing, so there is really nothing when we seek something because we all know we’re not divine. If we are, why do we seek that “something” which we all the time comprehend in our minds? I believe there is an actual Dark Lord.
