What Is LaVeyan Satanism?
LaVeyan Satanism is a modern religious philosophy founded by Anton LaVey in 1966 with the establishment of the Church of Satan.
Unlike Theistic Satanism, LaVeyan Satanism generally does not teach that Satan is a literal supernatural being who should be worshipped. Instead, Satan is used as a symbol representing individualism, independence, self-determination, questioning authority, and embracing one’s own desires and individuality.
LaVeyan Satanism places a strong emphasis on personal responsibility and the idea that individuals should think for themselves rather than blindly accepting the beliefs or rules imposed by others.
Rituals may be practiced, but they are generally understood as psychological or symbolic tools rather than communication with literal supernatural beings. Some common ideas associated with LaVeyan Satanism include:
