INSPIRATION FOR “THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER”
The original 1839 version of “The Fall Of The House Of Usher” was written by Edgar Allan Poe. In this story, an unnamed narrator comes to the aid, of his terminally sick childhood friend, Roderick Usher. Poe’s tale possesses the quintessential features of every Gothic tale — a haunted house, dreary landscape, mysterious sickness, and doubled personality — for all its easily identifiable horror elements, however, part of the terror of this story is its vagueness.
The Netflix 2023 version of “The Fall Of The House Of Usher” is an American gothic horror television show created by Mike Flanagan. The story is told over 8 episodes. In this version, Roderick Usher is the CEO of a dubious pharmaceutical company that has been marketing an addictive drug. Confronted by the authorities, who seek to bring them to justice, the story begins with the prospect of an unnamed informant (an insider) who will bring them down. Unhinged, Roderick calls for a meeting with his accuser, after the mysterious death of all his family members, he is ready to unveil his darkest secrets.
SYNOPSIS TO “THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER”
A once prosperous family falls upon hard times.
One dark night, returning to his roots, our protagonist, Roderick Usher, arranges an impromptu meeting in “House Usher” where he confesses his sins to his adversary, Augustine Mason. Augustine is not surprised, as he has long suspected and pursued the Ushers for decades.
So what happened? Back in 1987, could “House Usher” have been an illicit child porn mill, where Roderick Usher, and his incestuous twin sister, Madeline Usher, entertained many perverted ideas of what to do with their private school? Were the shocking rumors true? Did they planning pedophilic parties? Did they participate in dark satanic rituals? Were there many victims of forced feminism, rape, and even murder? One can imagine, all kinds of lecherous liaisons were possible behind those high walls.
In Roderick’s confession, he hinted that there were unnatural forces at play therein “House Usher”. He speaks of “her” a mystical ancient, called Verna (an anagram of “Raven”) with the power to change their fortune. Could that be true or was that just an excuse? Could the twisted twins have made some of their older children, part of their illicit “family” so that the sexual and satanic abuse could continue? What were these unquenchable evils that lurked in “House Usher” that seemed hell-bent on inspiring such awful wickedness?
Now that Roderick has told all, what will become of him and Madeline? More importantly, could this awful darkness, that threatens to consume everything, find a way to extract its final demands?
