Happy Ishtar

Easter was originally the celebration of Ishtar, the Assyrian and Babylonian goddess of fertility and sex. I refer to her preferred name, Lilith. Her symbols, like the egg and bunny, remain those of fertility and sex symbols. Humanity has been ritualistically celebrating the changing of the seasons for thousands of years. Many ancient cultures greatly revered the vernal equinox – the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

You can see her as #Inanna, or as #Ishtar, or maybe as her sister in the underworld, #Ereshkigal. Inspired by the ‘Queen of the Night’, a #Babylonian relief from 1750 BCE, with elements from other spirits that have been conflated with the #Mesopotamian goddess, like #Lilith.  A mix of #photography, AI-generated elements, and #digitalpainting. CW in image for partial female nudity.
