Embracing Addiction

Most people fear addiction, and it can be scary. To an occultist, however, addiction is a useful and beneficial teacher. Becoming addicted to something, deliberately and intentionally, is a necessary tool to learn how to master addiction as an overall part of self mastery.

There is, of course, a real risk in embracing addition; that one gives in to it but is not prepared to overcome it. Few things of any worth, however, are risk free, and the Left Hand Path has never been an easy one. Nevertheless, those who embrace addiction and overcome it will reap great benefits.

One of the keys to addressing addiction is to recognize that you are not your body. You can separate yourself from the feelings of withdrawal, observing that it is your body that suffers, not you. This is a similar technique used by BDSM bottoms; they note the sensations their body is experiencing, but do not personalize them.

Another is to realize that you can indulge your addiction if you chose to; likewise, you can abstain from it as well, again if you choose to. That choice is deliberate, whichever direction is taken, and has no innate moral value. Because this choice remains, the fear of eliminating the addiction is neutralized, making it much simpler to defeat.

Finally, a word about failure. Addiction can be a route to getting lost in the Abyss; in fact, it is one of the easiest ways to encounter it. Knowing this in advance prepares one to deal with it, and increases the likelihood of defeating it.

If you are serious about traversing the Left Hand Path, which I, as a Satanist, am, then addiction is a challenge to be sought, not a danger to be feared. May our Lord Satan use this tool to enlighten all of us who seek Him.
