A Passion Potion

“I took my troubles down to Madame Ruth ..l You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth … She’s got a pad down at 34th and Vine … Selling little bottles of Love Potion No. 9 … “

I’ve often been asked to recommend potions and spells since I am a not-so-blatant witch. In the past, I’ve done so privately if at all simply because a lot more goes into potions than the contents. Still, what most want aren’t potions but aphrodisiacs which, like the formula for love potions, can be found in abundance online and elsewhere often at a price.

So be it. Cindy isn’t into providing the secrets of the guild but occasionally does share the mixtures and recipes I conjure in my kitchen and stir with my wand (Yes, my husband wonders why I keep that crooked old oak “stick” I was drawn to which was on the ground near Johnny Mercer’s grave in Bonaventure Cemetery on a trip to Savannah.

The composer wrote “Moon River” which comes to mind as I type this … so I suppose my wand, which one day I may share about, has an aura of the romantic. Anyway, it lays in the window sill behind the sink in the kitchen among my flowers and odds and ends. I use it often tho no one is really aware. But this isn’t about wands.

So what is my “revelation”? When it comes to that extra umphf I put on the kettle filled with water and when it whistles I take a cup and brew rose petal tea. Not just any rose petal tea. Rose petals or rose buds, a touch of “natural” honey, a little more than a dash of cinnamon and the kicker, a dollop of High John the Conqueror powder. If one isn’t aware of High John the Conqueror root, look it up online. Stir and enjoy. I don’t think Aunt Jo will be mad at my sharing this.

No, I don’t add moonshine. That can do the deed also but I want to have my senses about me when I screw. And, yes, I even sing a little of “Love Potion No. 9” as I prepare and tap both pot and cup with my wand before I pick up the saucer and cup. Ya gotta believe.
