Lilith in the Bible
In the Book of Genesis – Chapter 1 says — 27 God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.
But then in Book of Genesis – Chapter 2 it goes on to say — 20 The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of heaven and all the wild animals. But no helper suitable for the man was found for him. 21 Then, Yahweh God made the man fall into a deep sleep. And, while he was asleep, he took one of his ribs and closed the flesh up again forthwith. 22 Yahweh God fashioned the rib he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man. 23 And the man said: This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh! She is to be called Woman, because she was taken from Man.
It appears that God made women twice, in Chapter 1, on the fifth day, God created man in the image of himself, both male and female created together, simultaneously. But then why did God create a woman in Chapter 2. “Because Adam had no suitable helper?” The most common reason put forward is that Lilith is said to have been the first woman in the world and was created by God at the same time as he created Adam (Chapter 1). It is said that Lilith was then banished and rejected by God after it was found that she was stronger and more intelligent than Adam and she would not obey the commands of Adam.
The instance often quoted is when the couple is having sex, Lilith says, — “I will not lie below.” Adam will reply, “I will not lie beneath you, but only on top. For you are fit only to be in the bottom position, while I am to be the superior one.” Lilith then says — “We are equal to each other in as much as we were both created from the earth.”
