Heroes Fall 10

CHAPTER TEN: Two Months Later… In the infernal plane of solar flame, Margas fumed to himself as he nursed another drink at his favorite pub. His plans to vault himself up in status by using Kirgon’s son against him were all for naught as the demon lord of magma was now dead… killed by some mere mortal. Now all he had was a half breed baby that he was bound by oath to raise even though he never intended on keeping it for long. He took another long drink as he looked over at the baby who was now sleeping contently in its floating cradle that he had fashioned for it. Margas had to come into town frequently now to find a succubus to nurse it, something that he paid good money and favors for and would continue paying until the child could eat on its own. The doors to the pub swung open, an event that normally wouldn’t catch his attention except that everyone was looking at the black hooded figure standing in the doorway. Margas looked as well and then saw what the issue was; the man was not a demon like they were. He couldn’t help but stare as such a thing should not be possible. A mortal was in one of the demonic realms. The hood seemed to shift from left to right as the man scanned the crowd. Then the hood settled in on Margas as the man made his way through the pub towards him, ignoring all the other demons, incubi, and succubi who were in attendance all either gaping at him or outright hissing at him. The hooded man ignored them all. He stopped a step away from Margas and looked down. “You are Margas?” he asked in a deep voice. “Yeah,” Margas said, looking up at him in a combination of curiosity and irritation. “What the fuck do you want?” The hooded man didn’t respond. In a flash there was a runed knife in his hand that he brought down and slammed into the table, right through Margas’ hand. Margas reeled back and screamed in pain, something that shouldn’t have been possible from a mere mortal’s weapon but here it was happening. Margas tried to stand but was held in place by the runed knife that was now through his right hand and embedded into the table. He jerked and pulled, screaming in pain, something that woke the half breed baby and inciting the rest of the pub’s patrons to action. The hooded man took two small black blunderbusses from under his cloak, spun in place, and opened fire on the advancing horde of demons. Bright white light erupted from the muzzles, cutting down a half dozen of the closest attacking demons and wounding the next rank and file enough that they backed off. The hooded man kept his weapons up as he scanned the entire room and then holstered them when everyone stayed put. “WHAT IS YOUR INFERNING PROBLEM?” Margas shouted at the hooded man as he tried to remove the knife and free his hand. The hooded man ignored him, walking around him to the floating crib to pick up the baby and hiss a soothing sound to it in the demonic language. The baby calmed down at once and went back to sleep. The hooded man put him back down and closed the cover. Margas was now gaping at him. “How’d you do that? No mortal can speak our language like that!” “Shhhhhh…” the hooded man bent over pressed his finger to Margas’ lips to silence him. “It’s okay. It will all be over soon,” he said, leaning close and reaching for the knife. “You see… I do have you to thank for my little Mandalorian moment. I’ve been hired by the baby’s mother to bring him back to her and you’ve constructed this nifty little floating crib for him that I don’t have to carry. So, thank you for this.” “What?” Margas was confused. “What are you talking about?” “Yeah, that was WAY before your time,” the hooded man sighed. “So much for the classics. Let me break it down for you.” He wrenched the knife out of Margas’ hand and drove it into his neck and then his chest. “You are my contract,” he said as the life went out of Margas’ surprised eyes a moment before his body disintegrated into a puff of blue dust. xxxxx Ronin stood up and smirked at the assorted demons who were now looking at him with a mixture of awe, fear, and anger. Why shouldn’t they be? After all, a ‘mere mortal’ just walked into their domain and kicked their teeth in. Stretching out his hand, he whispered a demonic incantation of his own and the floating crib with Alexa’s baby sleeping soundly inside rose up and floated into place beside him. Contract complete. Now all he had to do was get home. He casually walked towards the door as if he owned the place, the only sound being his heavy boots thudding on the floor that he figured was made out of some kind of stone that could withstand the heat of this plane of existence. Two demons grew a brain and moved to block his way. Ronin held up a single finger, wagging it back and forth silently to warn them not to try and stop him. They didn’t totally block him but they did get ahead of him so that he did have to stop to speak with him. “Just who are you?” one of them demanded. “How did you come to be here, mortal?” “Just a passerby, as you would say,” Ronin quipped. “No need to concern yourselves further.” He moved to continue on and the demons closed ranks on him. Ronin pulled his pistols and shot them both in the face at point blank range. “Don’t ever do that again. I’ll let you live this time.” “WHO ARE YOU!?” one of them shouted in outrage as he held his right eye while Ronin walked by them. “IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO BE HERE!” Ronin paused and smiled. He took a coin out of his pocket and flipped it to the demon, who caught it with a fumble. Then he walked out the door, smiling broadly as he was sure the demon was pissing himself at reading the inscription on it. Halfway down the path, he heard the demon screaming in a terror that only Ronin could bring about. It was a sound that was soon joined by the others as the cacophony from inside the bar rose as other demons read the inscription and screamed in horror as well. He couldn’t help but pull out another coin to flip it in the air. It was the same coin that was being passed around the bar and it had his real name on it. The observe of the coin said, My name is Legion… The reverse said, For we are many. THE END OF CHAPTER TEN
