Children Create Their Own Magic

Another shout out to the demons and monsters that lived under your bed/in your closet and actually obeyed all the arbitrary rules you invented to keep yourself safe, like “if light is touching me at all I can’t be harmed” or “if I’m stepping on carpet I am untouchable” or “if I move my hand in a particular pattern while I walk, I’m off-limits during my voyage through the dark house to the bathroom”. That was really considerate of them, especially given how biased in your favor those rules were.

Check this out — one of my first stories — most of which was based on real life experience — and yes, I totally agree that “Children create their own magic” … even if it is the Dark kind …

SYNOPSIS – UNDER MY BED CHAPTERS 1 TO 6

Some children really don’t like being left alone in the dark, and become anxious when the lights are turned off in their room. Instead of falling asleep, they become very alert, hearing monsters every time the house creaks, or ghosts with each gust of wind outdoors. Many children try to overcome their fear of the dark by leaving the bedroom lights on, or the hall light on and the bedroom door open. This is our protagonist, aged ten years old with an very active imagination, he could have sworn that there was a monster lurking in every shadow. This irrational fear of the darkness, coupled with religious teachings about the existence of demons and devils lead to many nights of abject terror. On his eleventh birthday, all of this changes.
