Living Inside the Daimon

“Happiness is to live in harmony with one’s daimon.” — Aristotle

Unlike the Greeks with daimon, the Romans called the source of inspiration Genius. In Roman culture, every man was born with Genius, every woman with Juno. The genius was very much like the daimon. It was a spirit that allowed a human to know their divine nature. So, the daimon (and we will stay with the originating name from the Greeks) was tied to each man and woman, and was tied to the divine within oneself and outside of oneself. As Carl Jung stated, daimonic inspiration is akin to nature for “nature is not only harmonious, but she is also dreadfully contradictory and chaotic.” In both Roman and Greek cultures, the daimon is both your friend and a trickster. The daimon contains both light and shadow. You must respect it but you must never fall completely under its spell.

  1. The dipiction of the Great Goat is LUST inspiring! I wish to service Him, kiss His Asshole, lick His Balls, suckle at His COCK! K

  2. Socrates spoke of following his daimon (δαίμων). He was pretty philosophically materialist, but he believed in his daimōn.
